Daily/Physiological Needs

In our daily lives, we all have certain must-haves such as food, water and air to ensure our well-being and happiness. If any one of these basic needs is unmet, then humans cannot survive. For human survival, the rule of three follows that one can survive 3-4 minutes without breathable oxygen, 3-4 days without water, and  3-4 weeks without food. This rule is crucial in understanding basic needs for overall health and development. It fosters survival and resilience, empowering individuals to face challenges with strength and grace. Therefore, prioritize self-care and engage in activities that nurture our well-being.

Safety

Once you've met all your basic physiological needs, it is essential to prioritize safety (and stability). This is not only about mitigating individual risk. It also promotes a sense of security and well-being for your home and property. Taking practical steps towards safety can make a big difference in creating a secure and harmonious environment for yourself and your loved ones. Take the following steps to practice situational awareness at home:

  1. Pay your rent or mortgage when due to secure a safe shelter.
  2. Lock your doors and windows when unattended.
  3. Install a reliable security system.
  4. Be careful about who you let into your home.
  5. Keep valuable items out of sight.
  6. Be aware of any unusual activities or individuals in your neighbourhood.
  7. Purchase insurance.

Love and Belonging

Being loved and accepted is a marvellous experience, which can bring a deep sense of connection, support, and happiness. It can come through family, deep friendships, romantic relationships, or a supportive community. Finding love and belonging will enrich your life in profound ways. Through these connections, you can thrive and feel a sense of fulfillment. However, cultivating meaningful relationships takes time and effort, so it is important to cherish the ones you already have and strive for a balance between meeting your practical needs and nurturing your emotional and social needs. This balance will lead to a more satisfying life.

Esteem

Only after finding love and belonging, can people work on building healthy confidence and gain the respect of others. It is a radical step in the sphere of career to maintain employment and recover from setbacks. It allows you to recognize your worth, seize opportunities, celebrate your achievements, and treat others with kindness and empathy. Cultivating esteem is a powerful journey that leads not only to others accepting you, but also to, self-acceptance, personal growth, and meaningful connections. Let your esteem radiate from within, illuminating the world with kindness and compassion. Two practical steps that you can take to cultivate and prioritize self-esteem and respect:

  1. Decide what are the most important to you and prioritize them.
  2. Set flexible boundaries.

Please understand that taking care of your mental health is just as important as meeting your basic physiological needs.

Self-actualization

This is the final step in realizing your full potential and striving to become the best version of yourself. It is the pinnacle of fulfillment and involves pursuing one's passion and purpose, where money is no longer the end goal but rather a means to an end. It is about setting goals that align with your values.

When your goal is self-actualization, you proactively and unapologetically work towards fulfilling your teleological calling to find meaning and purpose in your life. It is a continuous learning, growth, and exploration journey that can lead to a deep sense of satisfaction and contentment. As the renowned poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou famously said, "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style." Angelou's life is a tribute to her journey toward self-actualization, overcoming adversity and finding her voice through poetry and activism.

When Your Best Isn't Good Enough

Ever feel like no matter how hard you've tried or how much effort you put into something or someone, your best just isn’t good enough? Well, my mother, God rest her soul, used to say: "When man on earth has done their best, Angels in heaven can’t do more." I loved that woman... she was such an inspiration and my best friend. I miss you so. Well, here are some other advices I have gathered to help us feel better when life knocks us down:

How to Get the Life You Want:

According to Stephen Covey, in his book 7 Habits of Highly Effectively People,  in order to be successful and live the life you want, you must " put first things first" .  A pretty old saying if you ask me.  Something my own parents or grandparents have said for decades.  Now I am going to tell you the same thing again.

Happiness is a Myth

What if I told you everything you thought you knew about happiness is wrong? The truth is happiness is a myth and an illusion that is  overrated.   It is like chasing after a butterfly. The more you pursue it, the more it eludes you, and the moment you catch it is the moment it begins to die.  So, from whence came the word happy? According to The Oxford English Dictionary, the first record of the word was around 1350,   from Middle English, "a form of the English language spoken after the Norman conquest (1066) until the late 15th century," which is a derivative of the Old Norse "happ," meaning "luck" or "chance."  It combined "the word hap, meaning "a person's luck or lot," and the suffix –y, meaning "characterized by," to   form diminutive nouns and adjectives denoting a state, condition, or quality.  Then, in essence, when someone says, "I want to be happy," they are really saying that they want someone e...
