Recognizing Black History Month!

As we dive into February, I'm happy to recognize Black History Month and the incredible contributions of Black people throughout history, around the world and at home. This month is our time to shine as we remember the incredible achievements, resilience, and rich culture of the Black people. Black history is more than a chapter in a textbook or a month in a year; it's woven into the very fabric of our society, shaping how we live, work and play. From global icons like Martin Luther King Jr. to national heroes like Viola Desmond, the impact of Black leaders is undeniable.  🌟 Here are seven remarkable figures from around the world 🌎 whose contributions have made a lasting impact: 🌟 🇺🇲 Harriet Tubman (1822 – 1913):  An abolitionist and freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman's bravery and determination led hundreds of enslaved individuals to freedom through the Underground Railroad in 1849, and over the span of 10 years. Embracing Joy In 2024: A Liberation from the Chains of Comparison

"Comparison is the thief of joy." - Theodore Roosevelt As we embark on 2024, adorned with resolutions, the warmth of the new year, and the promise of joy, it's essential to reflect on the profound wisdom in Theodore Roosevelt's timeless quote. In a world steeped with social media highlight reels and the constant urge to keep up with the Kardashians, this sentiment is more relevant than ever.  Instead of appreciating our unique journey and the progress we have made, comparison shifts our attention to external standards that may not align with our authentic desires and values. It creates a never-ending cycle of seeking validation and trying to measure up to an ideal that may not be genuinely fulfilling. The Origin of the Quote: The words "Comparison is the thief of joy" is a profound and insightful quote often attributed to Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, a man known for his wisdom and insights into human nature. Roosevelt's w...

My Post-Thanksgiving Dinner: A Change of Tradition

Traditionally, I've spent every Thanksgiving preparing a grand homemade Caribbean feast featuring oxtail stew, curry goat, ham, salmon, rice and peas, potato salad, pasta salad, carrot juice, and more. However, this year, I decided to take my own advice from my blog post, " 12 Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Thanksgiving When You Don't Feel Like It. " The high cost of groceries, the exhaustion from cooking, and the fact that my daughters had different food preferences led me to skip the cooking altogether and opt for takeout. I ordered from two different restaurants to satisfy everyone's tastes. The combined total costs: 127.25, for a family of four without the muss and fuss. From our favourite Chinese Restaurant, I ordered dishes like Chinese garlic broccoli, mushroom fried rice, Shanghai noodles, breaded shrimps, and Caribbean fried chicken to add a bit of flair to the feast.  For festivity and variety, I also ordered from "Swiss Chalet," selecting their...

Twelve Meaningful Ways To Celebrate Thanksgiving When You Don't Feel Like It

Celebrating Thanksgiving when you're not in the mood or are feeling isolated can be challenging and, indeed, a test of resilience. However, there are several meaningful ways to navigate these challenges and still find joy in the holiday. Gratitude Journal: Amidst the whirlwind of negative emotions, take a moment to reflect on the positives in your life. Writing in your gratitude journal is a great place to start. Here, you may jot down the things you're thankful for, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they may appear to be. This practice can shift your focus from what's missing to what you have. Volunteer: Consider extending a helping hand to those less fortunate in your community. Volunteering at a local shelter or food bank provides vital assistance to others and can significantly boost your mood. This small act of kindness can remind you of the impact you can make in the world. Virtual Gatherings: If you find yourself physically distant from loved ones, embra...
